Surgery for Prolapse

Surgical treatments for prolapse aim to lift the prolapsed organ back into place or repair/remove the prolapsed organ altogether. They include:

  • Anterior colporrhaphy – can be done under local anaesthetic as an outpatient procedure
  • Posterior colporrhaphy
  • Enterocele repair
  • Perineorrhaphy
  • Paravaginal repair (can be done laparoscopically)
  • Hysterectomy with or without Colporrhaphy/Perineorrhaphy
  • Uterus/cervix suspension/fixation (laparscopic hysteropexy)
  • Vaginal vault suspension/fixation (sacrospinous xation)
  • laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy

Post-Operative Care

Patients will normally need a catheter overnight and 2 day stay in hospital followed by 6-8 weeks of gradual recovery depending on the extent of surgery.
